Always start the conversation by knowing their idea. Most developers do this mistake by not paying much attention to the client's idea.
If you pay a little more attention than required to the client's idea you can give better ideas and contribute way more than expected.
Ask questions
Ask them as much as you can, why are you doing this and what is the reason behind X, Y, Z decisions.
The more clarity you have the better suggestion and faster development you can do. The better plan of action you can frame.
Also asking questions shows them that you are interested in the idea and how hate the person who listens more and speaks less.
